Jose Salvador Alvarenga is a Salvadoran fisherman who became famous after being rescued from a small boat in the Pacific Ocean in 2014. He claims that he had been adrift at sea for 13 months and survived by catching fish, birds, and turtles.
Alvarenga was born in 1975 in Garita Palmera, El Salvador, and began fishing when he was a teenager. He migrated to Mexico in the early 2000s to work as a fisherman, where he met his fellow boatmate, Ezequiel Cordoba.
On November 17, 2012, Alvarenga and Cordoba left Mexico's Pacific coast on a fishing trip and were caught in a storm that blew them off course. Their boat, which had no engine or radio, eventually washed up on the shores of Ebon Atoll in the Marshall Islands on January 30, 2014.
The story of their survival and subsequent rescue was widely reported in the media and sparked international interest. However, some aspects of Alvarenga's story have been questioned, including the length of time he spent adrift and his claim that Cordoba died early on in their journey. Despite these controversies, Alvarenga remains a symbol of human resilience and survival at sea.
